Week 1 of BUCS action see many of our National League and Premier teams compete for the 1st time this year, with some making the long-awaited Top Tier debuts. This included Men’s basketball, Netball and Women’s Lacrosse while Women’s basketball returned to the premier tier after promotion last year.

Both men’s and Women’s lacrosse 1st teams faced tough away trips to Loughborough University to start their campaigns. The Women’s were 1st to make their debut in the top tier of Women’s lacrosse, and they could have forgiven them to taking time to adjust to the new level, however the team showed no signs of nerves and the game was a real classic from the start, it lead to a 12 all score line going into the last minute, where the team in Pink scored a fantastic goal to take the victory 13-12! The men’s 1st team, looking to continue their incredible record of making national finals, continued their dominance over Loughborough with a resounding 19-0 victory to start them on the path again hopefully another National Final and possibly one step further!
Both Men’s and Women’s hockey faced a long trip to Exeter for their first National League fixtures. The women’s 1st were up against a very experienced team losing 4-1 but the score didn’t reflect how close the game was. The men’s game was a real tight affair, with Exeter taking a 2-0 lead at half time, only for NTU to roar back and claim a valuable away draw, 2-2.
Back at Clifton campus and the home of NTU Sport, Women’s Basketball 1st team faced Northumbria University 1st team in return to premier tier action for the team in pink, who will be looking to avoid the fate of the team last time they were in the top tier, which was an immediate return. That determination was clear from the start, and the girls ran out to a commanding lead in the 1st quarter. That lead was never relinquished, and they ran out 75-61 winners! Great start to life back in the premier tier.
Finally, our 1st Men’s Rugby team had a long trip in their Premier North 1 match, North of the border to University of Edinburgh 1st team, looking to realise their dream of promotion to BSR (BUCS Super Rugby). A lightening start gave the boy sin Pink a strong lead, and again despite a resurgent Edinburgh into the 2nd half, held their nerve to win 24-14 complete with a bonus point to bring back to Nottingham.
Men’s Football also travelled to Loughborough in a repeat of last year’s National cup final. Honours were shared this time in a 1-1 draw, and the NTU boys look good to go deep into the competition again this year.
Special mention to Netball 1st team and Men’s Basketball who made their premier debuts narrowly losing to very strong opposition and will be stronger for the experience that’s for sure!
Next week a full schedule returns with most of our 80 plus teams competing across the country.
