Women’s Lacrosse 1sts defeat Birmingham in a razor thin contest – BUCS Week 8!

Week 8 in the BUCS season saw a bumper week of cup matches in the Midlands conference cup and National trophy cup as well as some big league games across our NTU teams.

We start our round up with a huge result in the league, with our Women’s Lacrosse 1st team facing 3rd Place University of Birmingham at home. This is the girl’s maiden season in the top tier of BUCS lacrosse, and a win would see them rise to an incredible 3rd in the league, above UoB. The teams were inseparable for much of the match, proving as tight a match as we have seen this season, but the girls put in an incredible effort taking the win, 11-10. The result all but ensures they stay in the top division at 1st time of asking with 3 games left and have an amazing opportunity to secure 3rd place with a strong finish to the season.

Our next highlight focuses on the National Trophy competition, this involves teams in Tier 1 of BUCS competition, just below the top premier tier. First up was our Men’s Rugby 2nd team who had a late change in venue due to the wet weather and a rare appearance on Clifton campus. They faced the University of Sheffield 1st team, who on paper looked like a huge ask to overcome. The NTU team ripped up the form book however and held out to win 20-15 and advance to the next round.

Another team playing 1st team opposition and, on paper, against the odds were our Men’s Hockey 3rd team. They faced Manchester Met 1st team in the National Trophy competition. To add to the obstacle in front of them they also were away from home. Despite this, the NTU team rallied together put in a fantastic performance to come away with a 2-1 victory and advance to the next round.

Two noticeable victories in the Midlands Conference cup came from our racket sports. Starting with Women’s Badminton 2nd team who faced University of East Anglia 1st team, who were a division above them. After the 1st round of matches NTU took a 3-1 lead and in the 2nd round secured the win 6-2 to advance to the quarter finals.

Away from our Clifton base, our Men’s Tennis 3rd team faced Oxford Brookes 2nd team also for a place in the conference cup quarter finals, this fixture proved far more straight forward for the team in pink winning in a white wash 6-0 to secure a place in the next round next round.

Final mention to Women’s Netball 1st team who have now followed up with not winning in their 1st 4 fixtures beat Manchester Met 1st team to make it 3 wins in a row in the Premier North League.

This past weekend we also had some fantastic results in the BUCS National Championships for Table tennis picking up 2 Silver medal in men’s singles and men’s doubles. While we finished 7th in the medals table for the BUCS National Short Course Swimming championship picking up a Gold , 2 silvers and a bronze in the process.
