Week 13 was a big one in the cup competitions for many of our NTU teams as they faced some unfamiliar sides from outside the region with some fixtures having to go into extra time or sudden death penalties. Many teams were playing in the last 16 of the National Trophy competition, hoping for a place in the end of seasons showpiece Big BUCS Wednesday.
The longest away trip of this week’s competition was our Netball 1st team, who travelled up to the University of Newcastle to face their 1st team. The girls in the league had an unbeaten record but hadn’t faced this Newcastle team before. In the end, a solid 54-45 winning margin mean they progressed to the quarter-finals and continue their unbeaten season.
Over at our fantastic tennis centre, the Men’s 1st team faced the University of Glasgow 1st team in the trophy competition, looking also to build on an excellent league campaign so far which sees them vying for promotion to the Premier division. A dominating performance saw the Scottish team head back on the long trip empty-handed, and a 5-1 reverse. Well done to Men’s tennis who are having an excellent year all round.
Two away ties in the trophy competition are next, first up our Women’s 1st football team who travelled to the University of Sheffield to face their 1st team. This is always a tough match and familiar for the team who have faced Sheffield several times over the years in cup competitions. This time around was no different, and the teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes. As the teams faced extra time, the NTU team showed the spirit and determination to score twice, giving them a 3-1 AET victory.
In a repeat of last week’s league fixture, our Women’s Basketball 1st team were again away in a much shorter trip to University of Nottingham facing their rivals 1st team in the trophy cup. Again, the girls showed a fantastic dominant display, cementing their credentials in both the league and cup competitions this year with a 68-47 resounding victory.
Back onto Clifton campus and two Conference Cup fixtures to finish, the regional Midlands cup competition with finals this year will be in Loughborough. First up our Men’s Rugby 3rd team faced a strong Loughborough University 4thteam who called in some big players last minute to strengthen their ranks. The team put in a fantastic display in an enthralling game on Clifton campus. Down at halftime, the team rallied and despite a last 5-minute onslaught for the visitors, survived on their try line, winning out 19-15 to the delight of the onlooking NTU supporters. A famous victory for the team as they move onto the semi-finals.
The final fixture at Clifton was our Men’s Fencing 1st team taking on the University of Nottingham 2nd team in their conference cup fixture. Always a tough opponent with the depth and riches that the University of Nottingham programme has, the men’s team lunged to a winning score of 122-113, advancing to the next round. Well done team!
